Winter Vehicle Prep Guide

Don't wait till you're stuck in a snowbank at -30°C to realize you should've prepped better

Days Until First Frost

--d --h --m
Estimated: November 15, 2025

Look, I've Been Doing This For 17 Years...

...and every single November, folks come in panicking 'cause their car won't start when it hits -25. Same story, different year.

Here's the thing - Calgary winters aren't a joke. You can't just throw on some all-seasons and hope for the best. I've seen way too many vehicles get towed in here that could've avoided the whole mess with some basic prep work.

So I put together this checklist based on what actually works out here. No fancy marketing speak, just the stuff that'll keep you moving when everyone else is sliding into ditches on Deerfoot.

Your Complete Winter Prep Progress

Check off each step as you go - we've organized this in priority order

Overall Progress

0%
Step 1: Winter Tires (Non-Negotiable)
CRITICAL Oct 15 - Nov 1

All-seasons are called "all-seasons" but they're garbage in real winter conditions. Don't care what the salesman told you when you bought the car.

  • Get proper winter tires - look for the mountain/snowflake symbol
  • Minimum 5mm tread depth (honestly, replace at 6mm)
  • Install all four, not just two - this isn't 1987
  • Book early - we're swamped by mid-October
Pro tip: Store your off-season tires here. Costs less than you think and they last longer when stored properly.
Step 2: Battery Load Test
HIGH PRIORITY Oct 1 - Nov 15

Batteries lose about 60% of their strength when it's -20°C out. If your battery's sketchy in October, it'll be dead in January - guaranteed.

  • We'll do a proper load test (takes 10 mins, usually free)
  • Check terminals for corrosion - that white crusty stuff kills batteries
  • Battery over 4 years old? Just replace it, seriously
  • Clean & tighten all connections
Real talk: I've boosted the same customer three times last winter. Finally replaced the battery in March. Don't be that person.
Step 3: Block Heater Check
HIGH PRIORITY Before First Frost

You've got a block heater. Great. But when's the last time you checked if it actually works? Parking lot outlets are sketchy too.

  • Test the cord - rodents love chewing these in summer
  • Check the plug end for burn marks or damage
  • Make sure the element itself isn't corroded
  • We can install a new one if yours is toast
Parking outside? Plug in when it's -15°C or colder. Your engine, oil, and sanity will thank you.
Step 4: Brake System Inspection
HIGH PRIORITY Anytime

Winter driving means you're gonna be using your brakes a lot more. Ice, snow, idiots who can't drive - you need brakes that actually work.

  • Pad thickness check (under 3mm? replace 'em)
  • Rotor condition - warped rotors are sketchy on ice
  • Brake fluid flush if it's been 3+ years
  • Caliper operation & hardware inspection
Hearing grinding? That's metal-on-metal. Stop driving and get in here before you turn a $200 job into a $1000 job.
Step 5: Fluid Top-Up & Antifreeze
IMPORTANT Before Cold Weather

Wrong antifreeze ratio and your engine block can crack. That's a $5000+ mistake from a $2 problem.

  • Coolant tested to -40°C minimum (we use a refractometer)
  • Windshield washer fluid rated for -40°C (not that summer stuff)
  • Engine oil - synthetic flows better in cold
  • Power steering fluid check
Quick tip: Buy washer fluid in bulk in October. Prices jump in December and stores run out during cold snaps.
Step 6: Rust Protection Treatment
IMPORTANT Best: Sept-Oct

Road salt is brutal. It'll eat through your vehicle faster than you think. I've seen frames rust through in 7-8 years without protection.

  • Oil-based undercoating (not rubberized - it traps moisture)
  • Annual treatment recommended
  • Cavity spray for door panels & frame rails
  • Clean undercarriage first - salt from last year needs to go
Investment thinking: Spend $150/year on rust protection or lose $3000+ on resale value. Pretty simple math.
Step 7: Wiper Blades & Lights
RECOMMENDED Quick Fix

Can't see = can't drive. Pretty straightforward. Winter wipers are designed different than summer ones.

  • Winter wiper blades (rubber boot prevents ice buildup)
  • All exterior lights working - you need to be seen
  • Headlight restoration if they're foggy
  • Check that your defroster actually works
Don't skip this: Cops love ticketing for burnt-out lights. Easy revenue for them, annoying for you.
Step 8: Computer Diagnostic Scan
RECOMMENDED Prevention

That check engine light you've been ignoring? Cold weather makes problems worse. Small issues become big issues real fast in winter.

  • Full system scan with professional equipment
  • Check for pending codes (problems about to happen)
  • Sensor health - cold kills weak sensors
  • Peace of mind before the brutal cold hits
Modern vehicles: Everything's computer-controlled. A failing sensor can leave you stranded just like a dead battery.
Step 9: Emergency Kit Stocked
SMART MOVE Safety

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst. I've had customers stuck on Stoney Trail for 6 hours during bad storms. Be ready.

  • Jumper cables or battery booster pack
  • Blanket, gloves, warm hat (stuff you'll actually wear)
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • Ice scraper, snow brush, small shovel
  • Snacks & water (yes, even in winter)
  • First aid kit & phone charger
Been there: Pulled a guy out who'd been stuck for 3 hours with no coat. His phone died. Don't be that guy.
Step 10: Book Your Spring Checkup
PLANNING AHEAD March-April

Winter's hard on vehicles. Salt, cold starts, potholes - it all adds up. Schedule your spring inspection now while you're thinking about it.

  • We get slammed in April - book early for better times
  • Spring tire changeover needs scheduling too
  • Undercarriage wash to get rid of salt buildup
  • Check for winter damage before it gets worse
Repeat customers: We'll send you a reminder text in March so you don't forget. That's just how we roll.
